Matunga will be city’s first solar-powered railway station

A proposal was sent to Asset Reconstruction Company in January for the provision of solar panelling at the Matunga Road Railway Station through the company's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

With 48 panels of 250 W each to be installed on the roof of the station, the projection is to produce 12 kW of energy per day. The monthly usage of the station of 5500 units is expected to be met by this installation.

"This is the first station in the Mumbai region to get its electricity from solar power," said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Western Railway (WR).

"We have already started the installation process and it is expected to be complete by the end of May this year," added Bhakar.

The proposal sent to Asset Reconstruction stated that the railways hope to partner with corporates and public sector undertakings to supplement the railway's efforts to serve the public at large and offer more amenities to its passengers.
