How to choose the right invertor & battery for your home?

Step 1 : Ascertain Power requirement.

 

Normally we don’t need emergency power for all the household lighting & appliances during EB power failure.  We have to ascertain which lights, Fans, Plugpoints need power when there is no EB power.

 

( While doing this most importantly, keep it in mind that the inverter points need separate wiring from the inverter. If for some reason separate wiring is not feasible in your house for some points, then you have to forget emergency standby power to those points.)

 

Suppose you need 3 Fans, 5 Tube lights, 2 CFL & 1 television to operate at the time of power failure. Below is the power consumed by these items:

 

1 Fan – 70 Watts, 1 tube light – 40 watts, 1 CFL – 18 watts, 1 Television – 150 watts

Total power requirement for inverter to supply is ( 3X70 +5X40 + 18 + 150) = 578 watts.

 

Step 2: Ascertain Inverter rating

Normally inverter capacity is mentioned in VA or KVA. &  Efficiency of the inverter ranges from 60% - 80 %.

Inverter power rating = Power Required X Efficiency

 

In our case, Inverter Power rating shall be 578 W / efficiency.

Let us assume that Inverter is 65% efficient then Inverter power rating shall be 578W / 0.65 = 883W

 

So as per the example stated you need 883W rated inverter, but you may have to go for 900W inverter due to standard ratings available in the market.

 

Step 3: Ascertain How much backup do I need ( in Hours / Min)

 

How much back up will an inverter provide? or How many hours it can run all of your equipments?. This is determined by the battery capacity. It is expressed in Ah (Ampere Hours). Capacity of inverter batteries are generally 100 Ah, 150 Ah or 180 Ah. Voltage of Battery is 12Volts

 

In our case let us assume 883W load requires 2 Hrs backup

 

Battery capacity = Power requirement  (in watts)  X  Back up hours ( in hrs) / Battery Voltage (in volts)

Battery capacity = 883W X 2 / 12 = 147 Ah

 

Conclusion:

For your 3 Fans, 5 Tube lights, 2 CFL & 1 television to operate at the time of power failure for 2 Hours you need 900W Inverter ( 900W = 900 / 0.8 PF = 1125 VA ) with 150Ah Batteries.
