BDV TEST PROCEDURE

B.D.V. TEST FOR TRANSFORMER OIL

The dielectric strength of an oil still ranks as the most common field test. The significance of the test it will detect free water, dirt and conductive particles. However, acid or sludge is undetected.

The test set apples an A.C voltage of frequency 40 to 60Hz. through two polished electrodes of 12.5mm to 13.0 mm. diameter with a gap of 2.5mm. between the electrodes at a rate of uniform increase of the voltage equal to approximately 2kV/Sec. starting from zero to the value producing breakdown.

The test shall be carried out six times on the same cell filling.

The electric strength shall be the arithmetic mean of the six results which have been obtained.

The permissible limit for various voltage levels are given below:

Equipment voltage class      permissible limit for satisfactory use

A-- >170kV          >50kV

B -70 to 170kV    >40kV

C-< to 70kV         >30kV

If the breakdown value is less than the limits specified above, the oil shall be reconditioned or filtration should be carried out again.
